Vaginal Birth After Cesarean

“A new baby is like the beginning of all things — wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities.”

Eda J. Le Shan

In mothers with a history of cesarean delivery, vaginal birth after cesarean section is a method of delivery that is generally approached with a distance, as the stitches in the uterus formed during cesarean section carry the risk of opening in subsequent births. However, with special follow-up and the correct practices of physicians, it is possible to have a vaginal birth after cesarean section without risk.

Especially considering the risks of repeated c-section deliveries, VBAC is one of the methods we prefer to use in order to prevent the complications that surgical interventions can cause in the mother’s body, rather than having multiple incisions and stitches in the uterus – when mothers are suitable for vaginal delivery.

Why Do Mothers Want VBAC?

Especially mothers who have had to give birth by cesarean section before and have not tasted vaginal birth may prefer vaginal delivery in their next births. VBAC is a very valuable delivery method in terms of health in pregnant women who may be candidates for vaginal delivery after cesarean section in order to reduce the increasing c-section rates in our country and to reduce the number of surgical interventions performed on mothers.

Who is Suitable for VBAC?

In scenarios where the mother has not had more than two cesarean deliveries, has no history of uterine surgery, the reasons that led to a previous cesarean section do not recur, the baby’s position and weight are suitable for vaginal delivery, and the mother’s birth canal is suitable for vaginal birth, mothers can give birth their next babies with VBAC.

Hospital and Doctor Selection

Vaginal births after cesarean section require special follow-up due to the risks involved; therefore, it is important to embark on this journey with an experienced physician. It is important that the hospital is fully equipped, has a blood bank and adult and neonatal intensive care units, that the operating room and delivery room are close to each other, and that the staff are experienced in this field.

Controls after VBAC

A vaginal birth after cesarean section requires the same checks as a vaginal birth, but in some cases, more detailed supervision may be required. If all goes well, the mother and baby are released after the first twenty-four hours of hospital observation following the birth. First week and fortieth day controls are performed in our clinic.
