Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are a common problem in the female reproductive system. They are usually filled with fluids. However there are also solid cysts that sometimes contain tissue. Some of them grows without causing any symptoms. In some cases, however, they can cause pain, swelling, hormone irregularity or other symptoms. They are mostly benign.
Ovarian Cyst Symptoms and Diagnosis
Ovarian cysts are usually detected during routine ultrasound examinations and are usually asymptomatic. But in some cases it shows symptoms. Pain in the groin or abdomen, menstrual irregularities, painful sexual intercourse, frequent urination or incontinence and constipation are some of the symptoms of ovarian cysts. We also know that some cysts can cause difficulty in conceiving. In addition to ultrasound, we use medical imaging modalities such as MRI and tomography to be sure about the diagnosis. Some laboratory tests are used to differentiate benign/malignant cysts.

How Are Ovarian Cysts Treated?
Ovarian cysts are divided into three main categories: benign, malignant and borderline. Gynecologists mostly treat benign cysts. For borderline and malignant cysts, we refer our patients to gyneco-oncology.
Benign Ovarian Cysts
During the menstrual cycle, the follicle reaches a certain size and ruptures. If it fails to crack, it continues to grow and manifests itself as water-filled cysts. Also known as a functional cyst. It is generally harmless. Most of the time it disappears on its own.
Chocolate cysts, also known as endometriomas, occur when the endometrium layer settles in the ovary. This layer is full of blood because it bleeds every menstrual period. With a functional medicine approach, our priority is to treat it by reducing inflammation in the body before surgical intervention.
During embryological development, it is caused by improper migration of tissues. Cysts are the most common cause of hormone dysfunction. In these cysts, tissues that should not be present such as hair, fat, cartilage and teeth may develop. It can only be treated by surgical removal.
Do Ovarian Cysts Prevent Pregnancy?
Simple cysts are usually harmless and do not pose a serious obstacle to pregnancy. However, since chocolate cysts cause adhesions, especially in the tubes and surrounding tissues, conception can be difficult. Difficulty in conceiving is more common with cysts that disrupt hormones, such as dermoid cysts. Not every cyst is an obstacle to pregnancy. However, we recommend that patients planning a pregnancy should have routine checks beforehand.
